Area youth put engineering and teamwork skills to the test

Area teams from New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Maryland met at Davidow Hall on the Salem Community College campus last Saturday Oct. 18, to test their engineering design and teamwork skills at the 13th annual Duel on the Delaware.

One part- an FRC competition event- was hosted jointly by FRC team 316 from Salem County, NJ and FRC team 365, of Wilmington, DE.

The second part was an FTC workshop and scrimmage event, sponsored by Diamond State FTC, NJ FTC, and PA FTC, three area organizations focused on engaging and inspiring youth through STEM.

In addition, teams competed for largest donation of new and used books to benefit Success Won’t Wait. A total of 12,000 lbs. of books were collected.

Your United Way dollars at work

September 26, FSR students held a read-aloud event at the Newark Free Library. Students read from their self-published books, demonstrated remote control robots, talked about their experiences designing and building competition robots, and collected entries for their Draw Your Own Robot Contest, which they co-sponsor with the DE Children’s Museum.

Your United Way support to First State Robotics improves the education of our students in more ways than you may think. Our students participate in outreach events in libraries, schools, museums, and other public venues in order to share what they’ve learned and encourage others to become interested in science, technology and engineering. Through outreach events, FSR volunteer students and mentors multiply the impact of your support many times.
